Grandmothers hold a special place in our hearts. But what makes these wise, nurturing and often quirky figures so irresistible as characters? We explore why grandmothers are such compelling characters in children’s literature. From passing down family traditions to offering unconditional love, our panel of authors will share why grandmas often steal the spotlight and why kids (and readers of all ages) can’t get enough of them!

Speakers & Moderator
Edmund Lim
Edmund is an award-winning author. In addition to academic works, he has written books on the first three presidents of Singapore and a Singaporean Jewish philanthropist. He also contributed opinion editorials to The Straits Times, commentaries to The Diplomat, South China Morning Post and Today online. Edmund served as a district councillor with Central Singapore CDC and a community leader, as well as a volunteer with Jesuit Refugee Service and Singapore International Foundation.
Melanie Lee
Melanie Lee is the author of the award-winning graphic novel series “Amazing Ash & Superhero Ah Ma” and the picture book series “The Adventures of Squirky the Alien”. She is also a part-time lecturer at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, where she develops and teaches communication and children’s literature courses.
Alan John (Moderator)
Alan John is a journalist, writer and editorial trainer. Alan has written three picture books, all illustrated by Quek Hong Shin. Their most recent book, Grandma’s Tiger, won the Best Picture Book award at the Singapore Book Awards 2023 and was also included in The White Ravens 2023 recommendation list by the International Youth Library. Like their earlier books, The One and Only Inuka and Ubin Elephant, Grandma’s Tiger is based on true events and features an animal that made headlines in Singapore.
